Rat

The Rat opens the twelve-year cycle. Tradition links it with quick wits, resourcefulness and a talent for noticing opportunities before anyone else does.

Personality

The Rat is pictured as observant, sociable and practical. It reads a room quickly, adapts to new circumstances and likes to keep something in reserve for later. Its shadow side is restlessness: a mind that is always calculating can find it hard to switch off, and caution can tip into hoarding.

Love and relationships

In relationships the Rat is described as warm and protective towards the people it trusts, generous within its own circle and wary outside it. Tradition sees its best partnerships with the Ox, and with the Dragon and Monkey, who share its energy.

Work and everyday life

Symbolically the Rat thrives where curiosity and planning are rewarded: research, trade, organising and anything that needs a sharp eye for detail. A useful reflection for the Rat is when to stop preparing and simply begin.

Symbolism

The Rat belongs to the branch 子, the hour around midnight (23:00–01:00) and the north. In the legend of the Great Race it reached the finish first by riding on the Ox's back and jumping ahead at the last moment, which is why the cycle starts with it.
