Earth

Earth is the phase of centre and stability. Tradition links it with the centre, the colour yellow and the transitions between seasons, when one phase hands over to the next.

Symbolism

In interpretations Earth stands for reliability, care, patience and practical sense. Its excess is described as heaviness and worry; its lack as a missing foundation.

Yang and Yin Earth

Yang Earth 戊 is pictured as a mountain or a dam, solid and protective, and yin Earth 己 as fertile field soil that receives seeds and lets them grow.

Earth among the other phases

Fire produces Earth, and Earth gives birth to Metal, as ore forms in rock. In the controlling cycle Earth dams Water, and Wood breaks up Earth.

Four branches of Earth

Four animals have Earth branches: Ox 丑, Dragon 辰, Goat 未 and Dog 戌. Each stands at the end of a season, which is why Earth is linked with transitions.
