What BaZi is
BaZi (八字, "eight characters") describes the moment of birth with four pillars: year, month, day and hour. Each pillar is a pair of a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch from the sixty-pair cycle. The Heavenly Stem of the day pillar is the Day Master, and the traditional reading relates everything else to it.
What shapes your chart
- The year starts at the Start of Spring (立春), the start of spring around 4 February, not at Chinese New Year. That is why the animal of your year pillar can differ from your popular zodiac sign.
- Months start at the exact instants of the twelve 节 solar terms.
- The day and hour use true solar time at your place of birth: the position of the Sun, including your longitude and the equation of time. In places far from the centre of their time zone this can move the hour, and sometimes the day.
- The day starts at 23:00, with the Rat hour. Some schools start it at midnight instead; you can switch under Advanced.
- Without a time of birth there is no hour pillar, and nothing is guessed from noon.
What the chart shows
Ten Gods (十神) name how each stem relates to your Day Master: the same element, the element it produces, the one it controls, the one controlling it or the one supporting it, each in a yin and a yang form. Hidden stems (藏干) are the stems each branch carries inside, from main to residual qi. The twelve stages (十二长生) describe the phase of a stem's qi in a branch, from growth to nurture; the traditional names of some stages literally mean sickness, death or tomb, and they describe a phase of the cycle, not events in a life. 纳音 is the traditional "sound" element of each pair.
The chart describes traditional relationships between its characters. It does not predict future events.
