Metal

Metal is the phase of form and clarity. Tradition links it with autumn, the west and the colour white, and with movement that gathers and condenses.

Symbolism

In interpretations Metal stands for structure, precision, principles and the ability to let go of what is no longer needed, like the autumn harvest. Its excess is described as hardness; its lack as indecision.

Yang and Yin Metal

Yang Metal 庚 is pictured as raw ore or an axe, strong and direct, and yin Metal 辛 as jewellery: refined, precious and polished.

Metal among the other phases

Earth produces Metal, and Metal enriches Water, as water condenses on cool metal. In the controlling cycle Metal cuts Wood, and Fire melts Metal.
