三 Three Harmonies
Half combination of the Water trine Monkey · Rat · Dragon: the middle sign is present, the Dragon would complete the trine.
The Three Harmonies (三合, sān hé) group the twelve animals into four trines of three, spaced four years apart. Two signs of the same trine share a common direction, even before the third member joins them.
What the tradition says
Each trine is linked with one element: Monkey, Rat and Dragon with Water; Pig, Rabbit and Goat with Wood; Tiger, Horse and Dog with Fire; Snake, Rooster and Ox with Metal. A pair is only part of a trine. When it includes the middle member, tradition calls it a half combination; when the middle member is missing, an arch combination. Neither is the full trine, which needs all three signs.
Questions for reflection
- What goals or values do you share without needing to explain them?
- When you agree too easily, what might you both overlook?
- Who or what plays the role of the missing third in your life together?
Elements of the branches
Metal of the Monkey feeds Water of the Rat in the generating cycle.
These traditional associations offer a starting point for reflection, not a definitive measure of how a relationship will go. Communication, trust and shared values matter far more than any pair of animals.
No percentage, no score: tradition describes harmony and tension, it does not measure them.
