Wood

Wood is the phase of growth. Tradition links it with spring, the east and the colour green, and with the upward, expanding movement of plants reaching for light.

Symbolism

In interpretations Wood stands for growth, planning, generosity and the courage to start something new. Its excess is described as impatience and rigidity; its lack as hesitation.

Yang and Yin Wood

The two Wood stems are pictured with traditional images: yang Wood 甲 as a tall tree, upright and steady, and yin Wood 乙 as grass or a climbing vine, flexible and able to find its way around obstacles.

Wood among the other phases

Water nourishes Wood, and Wood feeds Fire. In the controlling cycle Wood breaks up Earth, as roots break up soil, and Metal cuts Wood.
