Fire

Fire is the phase of warmth and visibility. Tradition links it with summer, the south and the colour red, and with movement that rises and spreads outwards.

Symbolism

In interpretations Fire stands for enthusiasm, expression, connection and recognition. Its excess is described as restlessness and burning out; its lack as coolness and withdrawal.

Yang and Yin Fire

Yang Fire 丙 is pictured as the sun, shining on everyone at once, and yin Fire 丁 as a candle or lamp: a smaller, steadier light that shows the way up close.

Fire among the other phases

Wood feeds Fire, and Fire leaves ash that becomes Earth. In the controlling cycle Fire melts Metal, and Water puts out Fire.
