Water

Water is the phase of depth and stillness. Tradition links it with winter, the north and the colour black, and with movement that flows downwards and gathers.

Symbolism

In interpretations Water stands for wisdom, intuition, adaptability and communication. Its excess is described as drifting and fear; its lack as rigidity.

Yang and Yin Water

Yang Water 壬 is pictured as the ocean or a great river, powerful and moving, and yin Water 癸 as rain, mist or dew: quiet, nourishing and everywhere.

Water among the other phases

Metal enriches Water, and Water nourishes Wood. In the controlling cycle Water puts out Fire, and Earth dams Water.
