Rooster and Dog

会 Seasonal Combination

Two of the Metal season Monkey · Rooster · Dog; the Monkey would complete it.

The Three Seasonal Combinations (三会, sān huì) join the three animals of one season: Tiger, Rabbit and Dragon in spring, Snake, Horse and Goat in summer, Monkey, Rooster and Dog in autumn, Pig, Rat and Ox in winter. Two signs of one season share its rhythm.

What the tradition says

A seasonal combination is described as a gathering of the same energy: the season's element (Wood, Fire, Metal or Water) is strengthened when its animals meet. A pair is only part of the season; the full combination needs all three signs.

Questions for reflection

  • In which rhythms of daily life do you naturally move together?
  • What season of life are you sharing right now?

害 Harm

A Harm (害, hài) is a subtler tension than a clash. Tradition reads it as small misunderstandings rather than open conflict.

What the tradition says

Harm pairs are Rat–Goat, Ox–Horse, Tiger–Snake, Rabbit–Dragon, Monkey–Pig and Rooster–Dog. The relation is described as sensitivity to unspoken expectations: things left unsaid matter more here than in other pairs.

Questions for reflection

  • Which expectations do you assume rather than say aloud?
  • How quickly do you clear up a small misunderstanding?
  • What helps you both feel heard?

Elements of the branches

Earth of the Dog feeds Metal of the Rooster in the generating cycle.

These traditional associations offer a starting point for reflection, not a definitive measure of how a relationship will go. Communication, trust and shared values matter far more than any pair of animals.

No percentage, no score: tradition describes harmony and tension, it does not measure them.
